How to Read a BaZi Chart
A BaZi chart looks complex at first, but it is built from a small set of layers. Start with the Day Master, then read the Five Elements, the Ten Gods and the Luck Cycles as relationships within one chart.
Step one
Find your Day Master
The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the “you” against which every other stem is compared. Its element and polarity give you a first piece of vocabulary, not a complete personality label. The season, elements and relationships around it show whether that quality is supported, redirected or placed under pressure.
Step two
Look at the Five Elements as a pattern
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water describe kinds of movement and relationship. A chart summary counts the visible stems and main branch elements. A larger share is not automatically better, and a small share is not automatically missing. Season, hidden stems and interactions belong to a deeper assessment.
Step three
Read the Ten Gods as relationship labels
The Ten Gods compare each visible stem with the Day Master and name that relationship — for example resource, wealth, officer, friend or output. They describe symbolic roles, not literal people or guaranteed events.
Step four
Place Luck Cycles in context
Da Yun divides life into roughly ten-year periods. Each period adds another stem and branch around the natal chart. The timeline describes changing context, not promised events, and exact starts depend on the calculation rules and complete birth information.
